Typographie

June 2010

Where do you find all of these pictures? I love type, but i can never find anything amazing unless i take a peek at your blog!

1. typo/graphic posters. Mi amor. They also send out e-mails with typographic inspiration every once in a while if you’re on their mailing list, it’s so awesome.

2. flickr, obviously. If you search “typography” and look through the pools, you find all kinds of neat things, and those artists usually have lots of other neat things in their favorites.

3. Behance. And not just in the Typography section, either—Branding, Print Design, Academia, etc. all have cool things. And I skip the “Most Appreciated” and go for the “Most Recent” stuff.

4. I have precisely two tags saved to my dashboard: “typeface” and “typography.” I go through them every once in a while to find stuff not from the ~major design tumblrs~. (I’ve developed very strong opinions about certain things being tagged as typography when they aren’t… typographical, but I won’t share them here. Tag what you like.)

5. And I’m just gonna pimp But Does It Float as my favorite blog of all time. It’s got typography on it, too.

6. fffffound and weheart it are cheating forever and ever, but in times of crisis (i.e. rarely), I will turn to them.

…that’s how it goes.

I think you do a good job with this blog. Seeing as those anonymous critics didn't offer any helpful criticism, they're probably just insecure design types who want all the typography for themselves :]

For like two seconds after I saw this, I debated making and posting a serious design person membership card, and doing it all in Comic Sans, Papyrus, and Arial. With bad kerning. But then I thought of all the smelling salts that would be wasted in the aftermath of my posting it and decided against it.

tl;dr thank you!

Actually for a non-designer, you have a pretty good eye for typography. You don't have to be a typographer/designer/artist to take interest in the field. Those who rather make it an exclusive club for design-degree owners are the ones who widen the enormous gap between the general public and the design scene, although "good" design is supposed to be responsive to everything that's common, and turning it into an uncommon. cheers.

Just. Gonna let this speak for itself. (My posting choices are informed by oh, that’s shiny, look at it than they are by Serious Design Consideration, so it’s nice to know that I’m doing something right.)

Hi! I follow you because you post interesting stuff about typography and design. I don’t care that you’re not a pro or a vampire or something like that. It’s fine. :D Have a nice saturday.

You’re too kind…! Have a good week.

To the dumb-fuck anon: http://aaronweyenberg.com/402/avatar-movie-font-is-papyrus womp. Also, great blog. I go to one of the top design schools in the country, and you have a stronger grasp on type that some of my peers. Keep it up!

Mille grazie, person who signed in to comment.

Avatar’s font is definitely Papyrus with some path distortions done in something like Illustrator. They did at least try to fool us by making the A’s unique from one another.

Case quite closed.

Fuck those guys. It's your blog: you can name it whatever you want and post whatever you want, and you have zero responsibility to do it the *right way* according to some anonymous asshole.

What is the right way to do a typography blog, anyway… and thanks. Also, djsiofa[reldfg I really really like your tumblr, you have no idea. It helps that The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is one of my favorite books of all time.

Avatar doesn't use Papyrus, while the typeface looks remarkably like it (and is pretty BAD compared to the bold, sans-serif they use on the AVTR poster) you can see how the characters are created differently. Just an observation :)

Grazie mille, ironic smiley face anon.

#you make a better window than a door
What age do you feel is the cut off for comic sans, making it socially unacceptable to use it? (Unless of course you're a kind individual who is forgiving to comic sans abusers). I feel it's 10/11, because at that age you start getting into young adult literature or more mature, and subsequently more mature typefaces as well.

(Since I have no idea how to go about responding to all the Nice Messages I got, I’m gonna space them out over the next few days and tackle the easy one first.)

…I’m a kind individual who’s forgiving to Comic Sans users, because bad typography has no age; and if you’re not told that Using Comic Sans is Bad, you don’t really think about it. It’s just another font in MS Word that you can use for a poster. If you’re not a professional—and surprisingly enough! Most people aren’t—you could just as well be using Georgia or Arial.

See also: Avatar’s awkward (for us viewers) love affair with Papyrus.

This is just me playing devil’s advocate, by the way. I don’t really like Comic Sans. It’s tacky and you shouldn’t use it if you’re older than nine years old and realizing that whoa, it’ll go over 72 point, this is so cool.

"what made you start this blog if you didn't know anything about typography at first?" - oh yeah, that guy had a good point. your tumblr username is better than the content. :)

Since I’m not quite sure how to respond to this, I’m just going to list all of my reactions and let everyone pick the one they find most tasteful.

1. lolokay

2. You see that little button up there? To the left of the dashboard button?

3. Reaction gif #1.

4. …is it really that bad? Gosh. Suggestions for improvement?

5. I love intelligent criticism.

6. Reaction gif #2.

7. Ironic smiley face - two keystrokes. Making someone feel a little insecure? Priceless.

8. You see that little button right there? To the left of your forward button?

9. Please sir, may I have some more?

10. And my personal favorite, reaction gif #3.

Any further comments (maybe an insult or two directed at my personal hygiene? My mother’s relations with goats?) can be directed to the ask page. Thank you for your time.

what made you start this blog if you didn't know anything about typography at first?

I liked them pictures with the words on ‘em. I thought it would be interesting. 828 posts later, it’s still pretty interesting.

Hahaha there goes all my cred. If I had any to begin with.

are you in college as a design major or what?

I’m the goddamn Batman.

Yes, in college, god help me; but not a design major. Not even close. (I knew nothing about typography except the difference between serif and sans-serifs fonts—oh yeah, they were all fonts to me—before I started this tumblr.)

where did you go?

Short answer: I’ve been soooo busy you don’t even know.

Long answer: Well. There was the end of the semester, and then I started working right the next day. And have been working and too exhausted to typewhore on my days off ever since. (Big department store, by the way. People who leave their dressing rooms messy should be paraded around in nothing but a hair shirt and some jingly bells .)
